Simulating the behavior of fermionic systems is a major application of quantum computers. The key challenge for quantum algorithms that simulate such systems is how to efficiently map fermionic interactions to qubits. By meticulous combination of the most efficient mappings in one dimension – the Jordan-Wigner as well as Bravyi-Kitaev with two-dimensional Verstraete-Cirac methods – the authors derive new high-performance mappings that use fewer ancillary resources and produce shorter quantum circuits than existing techniques. Low-resource requirements make these mappings suitable for emerging quantum hardware.

Multiplexed orbital angular momentum beams demultiplexing using hybrid optical-electronic convolutional neural network

Optical beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are promising candidates for free-space optical communication. The authors devise a hybrid optical-electronic convolutional neural network approach reaching a 4-bit OAM-coded signal demultiplexing accuracy of 72.84% under strong atmospheric turbulence conditions with 3.2 times faster training time than all electronic convolutional neural network.
